Have you got lots of fallen fruit on the ground? The summer is a busy time of year so don’t feel guilty for not harvesting as much as you hoped. Life gets in the way, and an experienced grower will tell you that leaving some fruit to decay can bring all kinds of benefits for biodiversity.Whilst you may have missed out, the fruit will provide food for birds, mammals, insects and worms. Look out for butterflies feeding on decaying apples as we move through the Autumn months. At the microscopic level, soil microbes work to break down the fruit which improves soil structure and releases valuable nutrients back into the ground. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t leave too much fruit on the ground, as it can attract pests, and spread disease. A little can make a big difference to soil health.#CommunityOrchards #CommunityGardening #ForestGardening #GrowYourOwn #SoilHealth #FallenFruit📷Drahomír Hugo Posteby-Mach ... See MoreSee Less
