This week is Zero Waste Week and also marks the beginning of Secondhand September - an Oxfam campaign to highlight the environmental impacts of the fashion industry and encourage shopping secondhand as part of the solution. So it's a good time to think about any plans to update your wardrobe for Autumn and ask yourself if you can find things secondhand first, or have anything to pass on to others. We are lucky to have the lovely Arthur Rank Hospice charity shop in the village, but don't forget there are other options too without going further afield. There's a pre-loved clothing sale on the evening of Friday 4th October at Cottenham Community Centre, you can put a request or offer on Cottenham & Rampton freebies page, or try out apps like Vinted or Depop.#ZeroWasteWeek #SecondhandSeptember #CottenhamBritish shoppers buy more clothes than any others in Europe, and fashion contributes up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The average Briton’s wardrobe contains over 50 unworn items, and at the same time we’re landfilling a staggering 350,000 tonnes of clothing each year. Buying fewer new clothes, looking after the ones we have and passing on those we no longer wear are key actions for all of us to take on for a sustainable future. Butterfly Conservation's Big Butterfly Count is here! Between now and 4th August find a sunny spot and spend 15 minutes recording all the of the butterflies and moths that you see.
